There are two kinds of memory types; short term memory and long term memory. They are structurally and functionally different from each other.

Long term memory loss

Long term memories last for years or even decades. Short term memories move into long term memories through long term potentiation, which is the process of strengtening the connections between existing neurons.Either traumatic brain injury or neorodegenerative disease causes serious loss of long term memory.

Traumatic brain injury: When some parts of the brain have been damaged, the ability to remember tastes, smells, appearances, or sounds might be affected, depending on what part of it has been affected. If the brain swells because of a head injury, brain’s ability to process incoming information lessens. Moreover, retrieving the information when needed might be difficult, even if the incoming information is processed. You suffer from retrograde amnesia, When you suffer from traumatic injury to the head and forget where you had been or what you had been doing for a few days before the accident.

Neurodegenerative Disease: the most common neorodegenerative diseases are Alzheimer’s Disease, Dementia, Huntington’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease. These diseases cause memory loss.None of these conditions act specifically on memory, but memory deterioration is a casualty of general cognitive decline.

Short term memory loss

short term memory loss is scientifically called anterograde amnesia. In this case of amnesia, ?nformation stays in the short term memory and is not transferred to long term memory. If a person’s attention is shifted, he cannot remember events which have just broken out.different kinds of memory are affected differently.for example a person cannot remember the events which have just happened but can remember physical skills.

The cause of the short term memory loss is the damage to the hippocampus, fornix or mamilliary bodies.not only damage to this parts of the brain, but also to the basal forabrain causes short term memory loss. Peoeple who drink alcohol too much tend to have this disorder more.

Stress related memory is mostly about perception. Prolonged stres may affect your perceptive process, so you only notice things related to stressfull situation in your mind. Subconcious mind tries to do its best to keep the information which is provided by conscious mind to be important.

Memory Loss doesnt cause things to be forgotten but it makes people deem things to be unimportant. If the same stressful state of mind is repeated everyday, the mind continuosly react to the pressures and that includes selective remembering.

Stress not only simply causes memory loss, but it also affects the way you think about yourself, your friends and your work negatively.

The loss of memory usually begins innocently. One day you forget your house keys or unable to remember someone’s name. Maybe even your own name. Fortunately, memory loss is not inevitable and can be cured by taking preventive measures. The first step is in identifying the possible causes of memory loss. Some common causes of memory loss include old age, trauma, smoking, alcohol abuse and medical conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.

Stress

It is more difficult to recall or learn something when you are feeling stressed, tired, anxious or angry – symptoms of overworking your mind. The human body is built to protect itself, and this could be a possible cause of memory loss as your mind is handling more than enough already. In order to deal with this, make an effort to give yourself a break. You will find that you are able to remember more easily when your mind is alert and well-rested. This allows you to pay greater attention and commit more to memory.

Healthy stress will provide you with a challenge, whilst unhealthy stress can make learning more difficult. Working under stress is a cause of memory loss as your mind has too many things to cope with, and may not be a symptom of dementia. For pregnant women experiencing stress, the child may face learning difficulties and shrink part of the mind that is related to memory.

Amnesia

Amnesia occurs when one’s memory is affected, due to either organic or functional causes. Brain damage through physical trauma or diseases is a common organic cause, whilst functional causes include psychological elements such as the body’s defense mechanisms. Traumatic amnesia occurs due to head injuries, and the period of memory loss is related to the degree of injury. Psychogenic amnesia, an example of a functional cause of amnesia, is an adaptive response that enables children to survive by repressing memories, thus maintaining an attachment to someone that has abused them.

Dementia

Dementia is a cause of memory loss due to old age. Depending on the extent of dementia, it may be reversible if it has not reached an advanced stage. Common identifiers of dementia include a change in the character of the person suffering from it, and some experience delirium as well. Dementia can be detected and cured through regular blood tests which identify cues which can be corrected to doctors, through the prescription of folic acid, calcium, vitamin B12 etc.

Money will be spent and forgotten, but memories do live on. Above are some of the causes of memory loss, and by pursuing a healthy lifestyle you can circumvent memory loss. Take steps to ensure that your memories are preserved!

A left handed person naturally wonders how and why they are left handed. It is generally thought that it is a genetic predisposition. However, no research has been able to prove the cause for some people to become left handed and others, right handed.

However it has been proven that no matter which hand you normally use, it is possible to train yourself to use the other just by not using the dominant hand. This may be tough, but if you keep at it, it is still possible. In fact, after doing this for some time, you may prefer using your ‘new dominant’ hand instead of your previous dominant hand.

The basic reason for a left-hander to become a right-hander, or vice versa is the stimulation of the neurons in the hand that was previously not used much. Though it is normal to hear about a left-hander trying to become a right-hander, there are quite a few people who want to become a left-hander.

Why some yearn to become left-handers

Now you may wonder why they want to become a left-hander. The reason most people prefer becoming a left-hander is because it separates them from other people, and also makes them look special.

Another reason for this is to become ambidextrous, where they can do work using both hands. They can use both hands for playing, eating, writing and even play football using both feet. This proves to be advantageous especially in the sports field as both hands and legs can be used for hitting, batting, bowling, throwing, etc.

Tips to become a left-hander

So if you are interested in becoming a left-hander, you basically have to practice doing everything you do with it. Once you do things with it, you will find it possible to start even writing with that hand.

However if you still go to school, it is better to write using your left hand when in school. It is only when you can write neatly and quickly with your left hand can you start writing using your left hand in school.

Writing the sentence ‘The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog’ repeatedly helps in improving your left hand writing. This is because the sentence has all the letters of the alphabet to provide you with the right practice while writing.

Try juggling and brushing

In addition to this, you have to develop the habit of holding, picking up and passing things using your left hand. Over time, you will get used to using your left hand, and in doing work with it.

It has been proven that learning to juggle greatly helps in your using your left hand. So grab hold of a few balls and start juggling to develop strength and coordination in your left hand.

You can also start brushing your teeth using your left hand more, perhaps every other day. Though you may find it difficult to control your brush at the start, over time, you will be able to brush as well as you do with your right hand.

With these tips and strategies, you will soon become left handed, and ambidextrous, as you wished.

Psychological books have always been the most interesting books for me. But I can not say, I have read enough andI can not say I am fully satisfied with those I have read. But very few af them were really good. Here are they:

Social Intelligence: The New Science of Social Relationships – 2006 – Emotional Intelligence was an international phenomenon, appearing on the New York Times bestseller list for over a year and selling more than five million copies worldwide. Now, once again, Daniel Goleman has written a groundbreaking synthesis of the latest findings in biology and brain science, revealing that we are “wired to connect” and the surprisingly deep impact of our relationships on every aspect of our lives.

Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ – 1996 – New York Times science writer Goleman argues that our emotions play a much greater role in thought, decision making and individual success than is commonly acknowledged. He defines “emotional intelligence”?a trait not measured by IQ tests?as a set of skills, including control of one’s impulses, self-motivation, empathy and social competence in interpersonal relationships. Although his highly accessible survey of research into cognitive and emotional development may not convince readers that this grab bag of faculties comprise a clearly recognizable, well-defined aptitude, his report is nevertheless an intriguing and practical guide to emotional mastery. In marriage, emotional intelligence means listening well and being able to calm down. In the workplace, it manifests when bosses give subordinates constructive feedback regarding their performance. Goleman also looks at pilot programs in schools from New York City to Oakland, Calif., where kids are taught conflict resolution, impulse control and social skills.

Hitler’s psychopathology :Numerous psychiatrists and historians have speculated about the nature of Hitler’s personality and motivation. During World War II, the Office of Strategic Services, under the direction of psychoanalyst Walter C. Langer, prepared a dossier for American intelligence, which was ultimately declassified and published in 1972 as The Mind of Adolf Hitler. Hitler’sPsychopathology is, to my knowledge, the first comprehensive work to examine the voluminous historical record amassed since the preparation of the Office of Strategic Services study using the framework of current thought on the development and structure of personality.

When Nietzsche Wept: It’s sometimes argued that Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical work demonstrates an interest in psychology, introspection, and relations of power and desire, that in some way prefigures the development of psychoanalysis. As a Nietzsche fan who’s also read a moderate amount on psychoanalysis, I’m not sure that a real connection or affinity exists between the two bodies of ideas. Nevertheless, such an affinity is assumed as the basis of this novel, which imagines what might have happened had Josef Breuer tried to test his “talking cure,” developed in his treatment of Bertha Pappenheim, on Nietzsche in the Viennese winter of 1882.

I read and liked these books, although these reviews do not belong to me…

While surfing the net, I came across an interesting knowledge about communication. It says If you want something from someone, talking into his/her right ear increases the your chance of being accepted. It says:

Next time you want something, direct your request to your target’s right ear.

In experiments performed at disco, a team of Italian researchers and their female accomplice tried just that approach. Her mission: to bum a smoke:

“If she spoke into your right ear, you would be twice as likely to give her a cigarette than if she asked by your left ear,” according to a new study that employed this methodology in the clubs of Pescara, Italy.

“Of 88 clubbers who were approached on the right, 34 let the researcher bum a smoke, compared with 17 of 88 whom she approached on the left,” reports Wired.com.

The Daily Telegraph has a stab at explaining why

Manythings we do have an big goal in common; to be happy. I, myself, started this blog to be happy, and make you find easy ways to find happiness. But did you know that sadness may be good for you?

Some scientists claim that sadness is good for us because it helps us cope with life’s challenges, more resilient and spur them to greater achievements.

Prof Wakefield, of New York University, believes human sadness helps us learn from our mistakes.

He said: “I think one of the functions of intense negative emotions is to stop our normal functioning – to make us focus on something else for a while.”

It also might act as a psychological deterrent to prevent us from making those mistakes in the first place, reports New Scientist.

The risk of sadness may deter us from being too impetuous or cavalier, especially in relationships or with other things we value.

Dr Paul Keedwell, a psychiatrist at Cardiff University, said even full-blown depression may save us from the effects of long-term stress.

He says without taking time out to reflect “you might stay in a state of chronic stress until you’re exhausted or dead.”

I have a lot of friends around who seems to be have a higher IQ than avarage people. But generally, including me, they find a lot of things to be sad. They are generally introverted and tend to be unhappy. Although they are successful at a lot of things like money, career, spouse…

A search about how intelligent people tend to be unhappy, enlightened me a lot. They say;

Children develop along four streams: intellectual, physical, emotional (psychological) and social. In classrooms, the smartest kids tend to be left out of more activities by other children than they are included in. They are “odd,” they are the geeks, they are social outsiders. In other words, they do not develop socially as well as they may develop intellectually or even physically where opportunities may exist for more progress.

Their emotional development, characterized by their ability to cope with risky or stressful situations, especially over long periods of time, also lags behind that of the average person.

Adults tend to believe that intelligent kids can deal with anything because they are intellectually superior. This inevitably includes situations where the intelligent kids have neither knowledge nor skills to support their experience. They go through the tough times alone. Adults don’t understand that they need help and other kids don’t want to associate with kids the social leaders say are outsiders.

It seems very logical to me. And this can explain why those friends of mine are so unhappy. So what about you, Are you unhappy and intelligent?
